You should have asked two questions – tutorials is completely different from deleted data.

Yes, the data remains on your computer even after you delete it. Tools like Undelete from Executive Software and PC File Inspector can OFTEN but NOT ALWAYS recover the data. What happens is the index of files the computer keeps removes the entry for the deleted file so that when the space is needed later, it can just be overwritten. Otherwise, deleting LARGE files would take a very long time. There are tools available that « shred » the files – basically they write over the file (which for large files, could take a very long time) with 0′s or a random pattern so that data cannot be easily recovered.

To erase the whole drive, you would probably use a tool like Darik’s Boot and Nuke (dban) which writes over the drive several times – because with a REALLY expensive data recovery service (or an NSA/FBI/CIA type of lab) it’s potentially possible to read the magnet field differences in how the data was written and recover the data even after you’ve shredded it. This is why the US Government never throws away old hard drives of computers in top secret labs – even if the data can’t be recovered with today’s technology, there’s always tomorrow’s technology.
